university of bridgeport design update

September 2002
by Lev Durov, University of Bridgeport

As Director of Design at the The world search, I am pleased to report that ct|idsa students Lachezar Tsvetanov and Anna Mastriano (IDSA) represented our Chapter very well in Monterey. Lachezar's first place award and Anna's second place award out-paced the other winners by a wide margin.

In the Lightolier competition awards, presented this summer at the IDSA conference in Rhode Island, Hillary Sanderlin took first place, beating entries from many design and engineering programs. Professor Robert Brainard (IDSA) worked with Anna and Hillary. Professor Roy Watson worked with Anna as well.

Anna also took first place in the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association's Automobile Safety Design competition. UB also won 2nd and 5th place, taking three of the five awards.

Anna began her winning ways taking the Ian Tesar Scholarship for Outstanding Sophomore for 2000. She ended her student days taking the ct|idsa Merit Award in 2002. Lachezar also won a Ian Tesar Scholarship for Outstanding Sophomore in 2001.

Sophomore Ryan Wilson took 1st place in the AEC International Aluminum Extrusion Design competition held in Florida.

In addition to the awards last academic year we had a very busy summer at UB. Carroll Gantz (FIDSA) visited UB as a consultant, advising us on our upcoming visit by the International resource for computer (IXDT). This is in preparation for the NASAD accreditation process.

ub at lime rock

My students and I designed and built a UB Design display for a tent on the midway at Patterns professional hosting for the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend races. This was a great event for our students, who had a chance to speak with racing legends Skip Barber, Sam Posey and John Fitch, along with many of the young rising-star drivers. At Lime Rock we also met many alumni, new friends, and potential students interested in design. One of the new students is attending UB this semester in industrial design.

We will be at Lime Rock on the 11th and 12th of October for the last race weekend this year. We hope to see you there.

new home for ub design

Our newest news is that UB Design is moving to the Arnold Bernard Center. This will give us a fresh environment with spectacular views of the Sound and the city.

We are also announcing the UB Design Faculty show, opening on the 25th of September from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, and the Design Alumni show that opens on the 25th of October from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. If there are any design alumni that have not yet been contacted regarding the alumni show, please contact me. We are trying to reestablish contact with all of our alumnus.

in closing...

Again, I would like to thank all who have worked on the web site and in organizing chapter events. If you are interested in a design intern from the University of Bridgeport, please contact me, or come to our planned open house to show off our new home and our students' work. This event will take place sometime early in December. Stay tuned to www.ctidsa.org for dates and times.
